Silver Linings Success

Friday 3rd July, 2020

Following cancellation of state print awards and suspension of APPA for 2020, the AIPP Silver Lining Awards were launched in April as our inaugural online competition.

Having now reached the judging phase, we are delighted to declare the Silver Lining Awards a success.

A record percentage of membership participation, overwhelmingly positive image critique feedback and a truly impressive number and range of entries have proven that the Silver Lining Awards were just what our members needed during a challenging season.

The Awards Committee sincerely appreciates the member response to this initiative.

Image Critique Sessions

Hosted throughout late May and early June, the Silver Lining Awards image critique sessions proved very popular with members. Participation levels were higher than expected, with a number of sessions booked out.

In total over 450 members attended and 56 experienced judges offered their services as panelists. Feedback was brilliant!

“The critiques were thorough, to the point and aimed at improving an image. To have my images critiqued by a panel of professionals was greatly appreciated not to mention viewing their input on other members’ work. The value I derived covered the cost of membership several times over.”

One of the sessions even replaced family movie night in the Reiter household, as reported by NSW Council President Naomi.

Apparently her sons so became entranced with the images and feedback they were receiving that the whole family snuggled on the couch to enjoy the online session together. Naomi said all that was missing was the popcorn!

A core goal of the Silver Lining Awards has been to encourage student members and members who had not previously entered AIPP Awards to channel their efforts towards something positive in a time of restricted opportunities.

Creating categories exclusively for Students and Newcomers has resulted in many members registering and entering AIPP awards for the first time.

Altogether, 526 individuals registered to participate in the Silver Lining Awards, representing almost 30 percent of all members.

In total, 2970 entries were received across 10 categories – the highest number of entries received in any AIPP awards for many years.

These numbers far exceeded our expectations and had all of us behind the scenes beaming, so thank you to everyone who has taken part!

First round judging is now underway with a small pool of national and international judges taking on the mammoth task of assessing and scoring all entries.

In preparation for using the new awards platform, all judges participated in an online training program specific to the Silver Lining Awards. We thank them for volunteering to judge – without their generosity there would be no awards.

Each category has seven judges giving a score of 50 – 100 to every image, the top 25 of which will be announced publicly as semi-finalists on Monday 20th July. The top ten scoring images from each category will a short time later be announced as finalists, along with the entrants’ names.

The finalist images from all categories, including Student and Newcomer, will then go through to a second round of judging in which the judges meet online to critique and discuss the images, and finally vote by secret ballot to decide the top five place-getters in every category.

Announcement and Prizes

Winners will be announced via online telecast on Thursday 30th July, so keep your calendar free for what will no doubt be an exciting event!

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and Silver Lining Awards Prize Donors we will be awarding over $45,000 in prizes from 1st to 5th place in every category.

This season has been difficult for many of our sponsors and donors so we truly appreciate the many companies and individuals who have put up their hands and generously given prizes to support the Silver Lining Awards.

On behalf of all of our members, thank you!

One of the outstanding features of the Silver Lining Awards is the opportunity entrants have had to submit their work for critique prior to competition entry.

Post-Awards feedback sessions will also be scheduled to give entrants a unique perspective on the winning entries, why they were awarded, and how the images were conceived and created.

Full details on dates, times and formats of these sessions will be announced in due course.

To all of our members, thank you for so enthusiastically supporting the Silver Lining Awards both in online entries and the overwhelmingly positive emails the Awards Committee has received from so many of you.

The Awards Committee has worked tirelessly over the past several months to create an entirely new competition platform which, upon completion, we will be reviewing and assessing as a model for possible future events.

Good luck to all entrants!
